Overview

Not all health problems can be cured or remedied. When a condition or illness enters your biography as a permanent feature, we talk of a chronic illness.

Naturally, you spend (or spent) just about all your energy, hope and finances on extensive examinations, and recommended or potential medical interventions. At some point, however, it needs to be admitted that a remedy or a cure are not going to be part of your future life.

From then on, your focus and efforts will be, not on eradicating the problem, but on how best to live with it. This marks a major emotional and psychological shift, in yourself, but also in those close to you. Another reality has entered your world, and no wishing it away will make it go away.

The exhaustion of repeatedly unmet hopes, emotional roller coasters and, finally, of deep disappointment can leave you feeling defeated, hopeless and despairing.

In a manner of speaking, one life has ended, whilst another life seems as yet impossible.

And indeed, if you continue to apply your previous values, demands, expectations and desires, you will struggle to find renewed peace and fulfilment.

Ahead of you now, lies a lengthy and delicate process of recreating your life, this time within the context of your changed abilities, needs and uncertainties. The required changes not only affect your personal life, social life and professional life, but also very much your deeper mental and emotional dynamics. Self-validation, appraisal, life purpose, and self-compassion are just some areas that will be severely challenged.

It is the scope of Heart and Soul Coaching and Counselling to assist you in this most challenging period in your life. This can happen by means of free or facilitated professional email programs. Or you might feel better served by a closely facilitated therapeutic course. Or maybe you prefer a more informal approach of casual consultations.

In order to accommodate the difficulties presented by different time zones, as well as the unpredictable energy/pain symptoms and special needs associated with many chronic health conditions, Heart and Soul is primarily an online, email practice. This format does not take away from the therapeutic value, but it does allow you to engage in this therapy entirely within your circumstances.

With any crisis, a fundamental change enters your life. In some ways, it proclaims the end of what was. But in time, it will also herald the beginning of what will be.
