Other effects of Smoking

Besides costing plenty of money and a whole selection of diseases, smoking can also harm your life in other ways.

Financial burden

Health and is wealth and health problems will inadvertently lead to financial problems. It's no secret that living a healthy lifestyle is actually pretty cheap in the long run (even if you keep eating healthy but "costly" food) if you factor in hospital and medical expenses.

According to CDC, smoking related illness in the US alone costs a whopping $300 billion each year of which $170 billion are for direct medical care and at least $156 billion in lost productivity. This also included upwards of $5.6 billion due to secondhand smoke exposure.

Social success

Smokers often prefer friends who smoke because they don't feel like they're being judged and they know their fellow smokers get them. But this subconscious preference can also cost the smoker a few friends especially if they have health conscious friends. Successful people in particular don't smoke hence they may not like to hang out with smokers.

One study even suggests that people who don't smoke or who have stopped smoking belong to family classes thriving above the poverty line. According to a research done by Tobacco-Free Kids, people who belong to higher income brackets were more likely to quit smoking or not smoke at all compared to their poor counterpart.

The main reason seems to be the healthy environment people in the higher income bracket live in whereas those who live in the slums were most likely to pick up the habit and be apathetic to the health implications associated with smoking.

Simply put, the poorer the environment and upbringing is the more likely it is for a person to smoke and not quit.

Poor sexual performance

While movies portray smoking as probably the sexiest bad habit in the world it actually does quite the opposite when it comes to sex.

Smoking increases the risk of ED by two times and the frequency of smoking also worsens the odds. In some cases, smoking has also been associated with infertility in both men and women.
